Statement of Purpose
by Dana Paleos
As someone with a history of trauma and a progressive, multisystemic genetic disease that eluded diagnosis for most of my life, I've experienced firsthand how the bureaucracy of medicine prevents the individuals who need the most care from getting help. For patients that require long term or out of pocket treatment, costs are astronomical, with or without health insurance. Employer based insurance discriminates against those who have endured too much physical or emotional trauma to work and perpetuates cycles of pain, suffering, deprivation and disempowering social constructs. Insurance also puts drastic sanctions on healthcare providers, paying for just enough time to prescribe pills, but not enough time for nuanced communication. Physicians and therapists who understand that establishing meaningful attunement and rapport with a patient is essential to a fruitful healing partnership are forced out of insurance plans.
Sadly, the private healthcare system in this country has robbed millions of people of what I feel should be an unassailable right: the pursuit of wellness—mind, body and spirit. Human worth is not contingent upon a job or socioeconomic status; we are each worthy of life and healing by virtue of simply being human. To truly uplift our culture, all members of society must have equal, affordable access to high quality healthcare, and practitioners must be fairly compensated to ensure they can sustainably provide care of high quality. Helping to remove the barriers preventing this from becoming our reality is the purpose of the Dana Paleos Fund.
As such, all donations to the Dana Paleos Fund will be put toward providing innovative, premium mental health treatments and trauma therapy to people underserved by our current system.
